FER, NICOLAS DE, A LARGE WALL MAP 'L'AFRIQUE'

Nicolas de Fer (1646-1720), cartographer, geographer, engraver was one of the leading publishers of maps in Paris at the end of the seventeenth and early eighteenth century. He took over the business begun by his father Antoine De Fer. Nicholas was a prolific producer of over 600 sheet maps, wall maps and atlases. His maps were prized for their decorative qualities rather than the accuracy of their geography. His reputation grew culminating in his appointment as Geographer to the King in 1691.
In turn, Nicolas was succeeded by two of his son-in-laws, Guillaume Danet and Jacques-Franois Danet and then their heirs, who continued the business until about 1760.
