SOCIETY OF DILETTANTI. The Unedited Antiquities of Attica. London: [The Society of Dilettanti and distributed by:] Longman, Hurst and others, and John Murray, 1817.

2° (529 x 360mm). Half-title. 78 engraved plates. (Some variable spotting.) Contemporary diced russia, sides with gilt border, marbled edges (light wear).

FIRST EDITION, IN A HANDSOME BINDING. 'One of the most beautiful books produced about Greek Antiquity' (Cicognara). The work reports the impressively illustrated findings of the Society's second Ionian Mission, staffed in part by William Gell, Francis Bedford, and John Gandy. Pirates in the Aegean and plague in the towns of the Porte resulted in an increased focus on Attica. In this volume all the then known important ancient buildings in Attica outside of Athens are recorded with 'unprecedented attention to detail' (RIBA). One of only 200 copies printed. Blackmer 1569; Brunet V, 570; Cicognara 2646; Contominas 680; Millard, British, 290-7; RIBA 3129.
