inscribed 'made by Leitch in 1831/copy of a miniature of Lord Byron by Saunders - it was given/Lord B. to W Alb***i sold by his son to W.W.Bankes/50 in 1848. I have *** a notice to W.Bankes/-writing in which he states that he frequently accompanied/Lord B in his sittings' (on the reverse)

Specialist note

It is believed that the artist mentioned in the inscription is Joseph Saunders (fl.1772-1811) who painted miniatures and executed engravings, exhibiting at the R.A. and the B.I.
