Specialist note
Mrs Morris was the wife of Valentine Morris (1727-1789) of Purcefield Park, Chepstow, Governor of St. Vincent. Allan Ramsay's portrait of Mrs Morris, after which the present portrait is taken, was sold Christie's, London, 6 April 1951, lot 139. A miniature of Colonel Valentine Morris by Smart, signed with initials and dated 'J.S. /1765', was sold Sotheby's, London, 31 July 1952, lot 109. Descendants of the Bouverie and Morris families married into the Sullivan Family in the first quarter of the 19th century.
