In the family of the present owners since the 1970s.

Specialist note

The present composition is based on a lost original by Massys of circa 1529. Numerous versions exist including the painting by possibly the studio of Massys in the Mauritshuis, The Hague, on loan from the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (see Friedländer, 1967-76, 7, p. 68, no. 67). Another version was sold with Christie's, New York, 17 October 2006, lot 11.
