Specialist note

Jacob de Heusch is best known for his Italian landscapes in the style of Salvator Rosa and the 'vedute' he painted of Rome. The present picture is one of the few examples of his 'Bambocciate'. Both subject and composition are largely based on Philips Wouwerman and the style is similar to that of his 'Bentveughel'-brother Pieter van Bloemen, who was also resident in Rome when De Heusch lived in the city between circa 1675-1693.
