With the launch of reference 1680 in 1966, the date function and different case materials for the Submariner were introduced. The new model was depth rated to 660 ft (200m), featured an 8 mm. "Trip Lock" crown, crown guards and magnified "Cyclops" date window. The model was also available in stainless steel and gold and 18K gold. Early versions featured the red printed "Submariner", as of the mid 1970s the dials were made with the all-white printing. In some markets the version with the red printed "Submariner" was however available until the 1980s.
