Specialist note
In 1900 Allerley Glossep left England and travelled to South Africa against her family's wishes, farming for a while at Klapmuts, near Paarl but later took up studios in Cape Town becoming an active member of the artistic community. During the years 1917 to 1924 she lived in Johannesburg but travelled the country widely painting the South African landscape and its inhabitants.
