George Stubbs, A.R.A. (1724-1806)

Early writings on natural history show that 'tyger' was a generic term, commonly applied to all the larger cats, with the sole exception of the lion. Bufton, for example, noted that 'leopards and panthers so often confounded, have both been called Tigers by most travellers'.
