Whilst on his honeymoon in 1856, Charles Piazzi Smyth's pioneering observations from his own Alta-Vista Observatory on the peaks of Tenerife, using a fine 74 inch equatorial telescope, and at over 10,000 feet above sea level, established the astronomical advantages of an observatory at high altitude
