Lot 73 Known as 'Kawkab al Sharq'- 'The Shining Star of the Middle East', Umm Kulthum (1904-1975) was unquestionably the greatest Arab singer of the 20th century. Her incomparable voice was renowned all over Egypt by the time she was 5 years old and her importance in the Arab countries was so great that she was received with the same ceremony as heads of State. Her concerts were held on the first Thursday of each month in which she would sing her massive audience into an almost trance-like state with single songs lasting well over an hour as she repeated lines over and over again, each in a slightly different style. Her funeral, led by the presidential court, was followed by several million of her admirers and her popularity remains strong even thirty years after her death.
