EIGHT CIRCA 1810, TWO OF A LATER DATE
Comprising two armchairs and eight side chairs, each scroll back with Greek key crestrail over a padded panel, the sides with stylized foliage over the tufted cushion on channelled sabre legs with casters, upholstered in striped silk (10)

Lt. Col. Norman Johnstone M.B.E.; Christie's, London, 17 March 1977, lot 35.

Specialist note

The elegant chairs are designed in the early 19th century French/antique fashion, with Grecian ribbon-fretted tablets and Grecian scrolled and reed-enriched legs. Their form relates to that of parlour chair patterns in George Smith's Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1808 (pls. 39 and 40).
