Specialist note
This work may have been executed during one of Rowlandson's tours of the Isle of Wight. His first documented visit was in 1784, when he was accompanied by his friend the painter and caricaturist Henry Wigstead, and he returned in 1791. On both occasions he produced many sketches documenting the topography of the island as well as the daily life of its inhabitants.
