'That Nicky Hoberman's paintings are able to engender a critique of contemporary society has been proved by their critical reception. The child's identity as social construction, play-acting as an expression of darker possibilities, and the negotiation of sexuality within fantasy, are among the issues that her work opens up to scrutiny.
