Specialist note
Both of these works are after the picture in the National Portrait Gallery, London, attributed to Placido Costanzi (1702-1759). The shield and helmet in the foreground bear the motto of the Keith clan -Veritas Vincit meaning 'Truth Conquers'. The castle in the background is that of Dunnottar, Aberdeenshire, and the groomsman is possibly Ibraham, a member of Marischal's retinue.
