Specialist note

John Sloan wrote of the present work, "What we called the moors lying between bay and ocean were rich in material. This fresh water pond was an inspiration for lush color and light" (J. Sloan, Gist of Art, New York, 1939, p. 242). He was also quoted as having said of this work, "Frog Pond shows the Van Gogh 'influence,' in its paint-drawing." (J. Sloan, Notes, [unpublished, recorded by Helen Farr Sloan], Wilmington, Delaware, p. 242)
