Specialist note
The Martyrdom of Saint Catherine is similar in composition to the artist's 1791 altarpiece of The Martyrdom of Saint Barbara for the Brno Cathedral. There is another drawing and an oil sketch related to the altarpiece (F. Dworschak et al., Der Maler Martin Johann Schmidt, 1718-1801, Vienna, 1955, pl. 133, no. 134).
The Design for a title page includes a central panel surrounded by roundels and cartouches depicting Biblical scenes. Clockwise from the upper left they are, The Annunciation; Moses with the Ten Commandments confronts Christ; The creation of the Universe; The Adoration of the Shepherds; The Resurrection of Christ; The Descent of the Holy Ghost; The Baptism of Christ; The Assumption; and The Crucifixion. The two panels on the base depict The Last Supper and an unidentified scene.
