Signed and dated 'J. Christen, 1815', on a black stone ground with a gilt metal frame and larger ebonised surround, the reverse to frame inscribed '48' and '14130' and with a paper label

with E. Pinkas, New York, 1966.

Specialist note

Joseph-Anton-Maria Christen was in Vienna in 1815, the date of the present bust portrait, which suggests that the sitter was most likely an Austrian gentleman, as does the Biedermeier period frame.
