Specialist note

The Musée des Mounuments Français was established in the 1790s by the artist Alexander Lenoir, who wished to preserve France's architectural and sculptural heritage, particularly in the wake of the Revolution. The museum was situated in the former monastery of the Petits Augustins until it was closed after the Restoration and a number of the works were transferred to the Louvre.
Cochereau's depiction of the two rooms from the Museum were donated to the Musée Carnavalet, Paris, in the early twentieth century.
