Specialist note
Like its en suite centre-table (lot 551), this Grecian 'buhl' filigreed and china-railed writing-table was designed by Gillow as appropriate for fashionable library/living-rooms. Related sofa-tables, with truss-buttressed and plinth-supported pilasters raised on bacchic lion paws issuing from palm-wrapped trusses, feature in one of Gillow of Oxford Street's plans of 1830 for a library/living-room (S. E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, Woodbridge, 2008, vol 11, p. 352, pls. E9 & E10).
