Specialist note

Such festive vine-enwreathed bacchic ram heads provided appropriate embellishment for chimneypiece pilasters of banqueting and dining rooms around 1800, and had been popularised by chimneypiece patterns in G.B.Piranesis, Diverse Maniere dadornare I cammini, Rome, 1769.
