Specialist note

A detailed observation of this model of a percheron stallion shows how Barye was directly influenced by Renaissance scuplture, especially that of Bernini and how the simple slightly raised base recalls his romantic spirit. The dramatic content of the model is emphasized by the sense of movement and the strongly visible musculature.
After 1876, the model was edited by Thiébaut Frères, both in its original size and in a version double the size.

Another cast is illustrated in C. Payne, Animals in bronze, Woodbridge, 1987, p. 280, fig. H19.
