The chess undersides incised with factory mark of crossed swords and various serial numbers and the circular box incised with factory mark of crossed swords and inscribed BÖTTGER STEINZEUG
The king 8 cm. high; the pawn 3 cm. high; the box 20.5 cm. diam.

Specialist note

The sculptor Max Esser (1885-1943), was given a studio at the Meissen factory in 1920. This allowed him, as a freelance artist, the opportunity to work in both porcelain and Böttger ware. He achieved acclaim for his impressive animal figures and the Gran Prix at the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne of 1937 in Paris. Max Esser's has combined motifs inspired from the underworld sea life and modernist Art Deco forms to create a futurist set.
