Probably South German, the cabinet, mid-17th century; the stand, late 19th century
The rectangular top with three quarter gallery above a ripple-moulded frieze and an arrangement of twelve drawers and a central cupboard flanked by columnar pilasters, enclosing a further five drawers and a secret compartment; each drawer front inlaid with bone and ebonised rosewood depicting wild animals and mythical beasts desporting and embellished with scratch carved decoration, four of the drawers with later locks stamped 'VR Secure Patent' below a crown; the apron to the later stand similarly decorated on spiral ebonised supports joined by an X-stretcher on turned feet
