Sir Thomas Phillips, Bt., of Middlehill (according to a label on the reverse).

Specialist note

Christopher Wright of the Courtauld Institute suggested an attribution to a 15th-century Burgundian artist, and noted that a related version in which the figure wears a pink tunic was at one point with Agnew's, London (in a letter dated 22 March 1971).
