A PAIR OF NORTH ITALIAN PARCEL-GILT AND BLUE-PAINTED STOOLS

Each with a rectangular padded seat covered à châssis in foliate-embroidered silk with gold patterned silk appliqués, above a panelled frieze, on turned tapering fluted legs terminating in ball feet, one with remains of a paper label inscribed 'MONCALIERI D.C. 3421/' and dated '1908', branded with inventory number 'D.C. 1310 N', and with crowned brand 'C/V', inscribed in red ink '950', the other branded with inventory number 'DC 1309 N' and with crowned brand 'C/V', inscribed in red in '946', and with remains of MONCALIERI label

Specialist note

These elegant stools bear 'Moncalieri' labels and various related inventory brands which suggest they were once part of the furnishing of a residence of the Royal House of Savoy. Next to the Quirinale Palace, Racconigi and Villa Reale Monza, the castle of Moncalieri was one of the main Royal residences of the House of Savoy in the 19th Century.

A suite of seat furniture comprising a sofa and a pair of stools identical to the present lot, bearing, among others, a label inscribed 'R. Palazzo - Moncalieri/N. 3113 D.C.', further inventory numbers and fire-marked with Crowned monograms identical to these present on the stools here offered, were sold by Dinastia Antiquários, Leiloeiros e Galleria de Arte, LDA., Lisbon, 2002. This suggests that the present lot most probably formed part of a larger suite and a closely related pair of stools and a banquette featuring a similar geometric panelled frieze and turned tapering fluted legs, was sold at Sotheby's, London, 29 May 1998, lot 192, while a further related pair was sold at Christie's, New York, 25-26 September 2001, lot 284.
