A PAIR OF FRENCH ORMOLU, PATINATED BRONZE AND PORPHYRY THREE-BRANCH CANDELABRA

These candelabra most certainly derive from the celebrated models by the ciseleur-doreur François Rémond (1746-1812). One of the main distinctions between Rémond's representation of classically-draped maidens and the present pair, is the presence of playful putti to the feet of the female figures. A comparable representation of playful youths may be found on the relief-cast panels which adorn the bleu turquin plinths of a related pair of candelabra illustrated in G. & R. Wannenes, Les Bronzes Ornementaux et Les Objets Montés, Milan, 2004, p.241.
