Specialist note

Sold at the 'Princess Royal Sale' in these rooms in 1925 as a portrait of Madmoiselle Guimard (1743-1816), the famous French ballerina, this painting depicts the dancer in a white and pink robe and feathered headdress, the style of which was fashionable throughout Europe from the 1760s onwards.

Schall studied at the Académie Royal, Paris in 1772, but did not become a member of it until after the French Revolution. He was greatly influenced by Rococo artists such as François Boucher and Jean-Honoré Fragonard and often painted single female dancers in picturesque landscapes.
