Louay Kayyali (Syrian, 1934-1978)

Throughout his career Kayyali often explored the theme of motherhood in his paintings, showing a mother with a single child in ways reminiscent of the motif of the Madonna and Child from Syrian icon painting. The present painting is an early example.
