A LARGE VIENNA STYLE IVORY-GROUND VASE
LATE 19TH/20TH CENTURY, BLUE BEEHIVE MARK
Of baluster form, finely painted with a continuous view after Guido Reni's Aurora with the sun-god Apollo driving his golden-chariot and attended by a bevy of maidens, Dawn leading the way, dispelling the darkness and bearing flowers in each hand, all between variant gilt bands of key-pattern and fruiting grapevine, the conforming neck and socle with alternating iridescent-ruby ground cartouches of flower-filled torcheres and musical trophies
33½ in. (85.1 cm.) high

Specialist note

The present subject is based upon Guido Reni's celebrated fresco of Dawn, known as his Aurora. The fresco, datable to the first seven months of 1614, was commissioned by Cardinal Scipione Borghese for his garden loggia in the grounds of his palace on the Quirinal Hill.
