Specialist note
William Jack, the joiner for the garden furniture was paid in November 1912. He had previously quoted for benches in different sizes; full length, three quarters and half sizes. A bench 2.03 metres wide survives at Hill House with three panels to the back. The present lot has four panels and its length corresponds to the 'full length' description in Mackintosh's job books. The accompanying table has not been traced.
Charles Rennie Mackintosh had previously designed a large semi-circular seat and table for Windyhill in 1903, but these have not been located.
Christie's wishes to thank Roger Billcliffe for his assistance with cataloguing this lot.
