THOMAS EDWARD LAWRENCE (1888-1935)

Autograph note signed ('T.E. Shaw') to César Saerchinger, n.p., n.d., four lines at the foot of a typed letter from Saerchinger, 22 March 1933, one page, 4to. Provenance: Christie's sale, 2 July 1983, lot 369; the Spiro Family Collection.

Saerchinger, the European Service Director of the Columbia Broadcasting System, had been prompted by news of Lawrence's imminent discharge to write suggesting a meeting about 'a matter which will be of some interest to you'. Lawrence's reply is brief: 'If you can assure me that the interesting matter will not involve me either in broadcasting or in visiting the States ... but I have no plans for coming to London in the near future. Perhaps you would do better to write me'.

Lawrence had requested early discharge from the RAF in March 1933, and it was granted in April.
