with Carlo Gamora, Vienna, until 1819, when acquired (Liechtenstein Ankaufsverzeichnis [acquisitions list], no. 108) by
Johann I Josef, Prince of Liechtenstein, Duke of Troppau and Jägerndorf (1760-1836), and by descent in the Garden Palace at Rossau (where recorded by Falke in 1873 and 1885, loc. cit.); moved to Schloss Feldsberg, Valtice, Bohemia, in January 1895 (inv. no. 1470), where it remained until 1944, when moved Schloss Moosham, Unternberg, Lungau, until 1945, when moved to Schloss Vaduz, Liechtenstein, until the present.

Specialist note

This is a billiant example of Moucheron's mature landscape style and shows clearly the influence of his teacher in Amsterdam, Jan Asselijn. As a young man, in the mid 1650s, Moucheron travelled to France and possibly to Italy where at some point he must also have encountered the work of Jan Both - the pre-eminent southern landscape painter of the day. In this work, the pictorial scheme in which travellers approach the viewer on a track against a distant, warmly-lit, southern landscape framed by trees, instantly brings to mind the large-scale landscapes of Both.
