with Drapeau until 1808, when acquired from him by
Johann I Josef, Prince of Liechtenstein, Duke of Troppau and Jägerndorf (1760-1836), and by descent in the Garden Palace at Rossau, where recorded by Falke (1873 and 1885, loc. cit.), until 1896 when moved to Schloss Feldsberg, Valtice, Bohemia (inv. no. F 1414); in Vienna from September to October 1908, when returned to Schloss Feldsberg, where it remained until 1944, when moved to Schloss Moosham, Unternberg, Lungau, until 1945, when moved to Schloss Vaduz, Liechtenstein, until the present.

Specialist note

This derives from a picture by Barocci known in two versions - in the Vatican, Rome, and the Church of Santo Stefano, Piobbico. The composition became widely known in The Netherlands by virtue of the engraving by Cornelis Cort (Bartsch 43 iii; see fig. 1) which probably served as the prototype for the present work; its origin is hinted at by its oak support.
