Specialist note

The sitter is traditionally identified as Elizabeth Greville (d. 1699), Lady Guilford, the first wife of Francis, 2nd Baron Guilford. She also sat to Sir Godfrey Kneller, who painted her, three-quarter-length, now in a private collection.
