Specialist note
A version of this buckle was shown at the Centennial Exhibition in Paris in 1900, in which the lion was carved from emerald. It was carved by H.A Burdy, a well known engraver who won a prize at the Prix de Rome in 1863. The buckle was designed by Lucien Hirtz and made by Epinasse and Varanoz.
