A REGENCY MAHOGANY CANED BERGERE
Early 19th century, in the manner of Morgan and Saunders
With button-down striped cotton cushion back, seat and padded arms, with baluster arm supports and turned tapering legs on large brass caps and castors

Note du spécialiste

This robust form of caned bergere or 'Library Reading Chair', with pillared supports in the French antique manner, was invented by Messrs. Morgan and Saunders of The Strand and praised for its comfort in Rudolph Ackermann's The Repository of Arts, September 1810 (pl. 19). A similar bergere was sold Christie's London, 15 April 1999, lot 87.
