Choi So Young's Port (Lot 513) is more rich and crisp in its diversity in tone and color. The cool contour against the contrasting color of each denim differentiates and accentuates the sundry texture of the intended subject. The sea drenched in murky green with folds that mimic the ripples of the water is against the stiffly ironed blue docks beneath the dyed blue and white clear sky. All arranged in a peculiarly unending composition, the landscape is not conventionally fixed into a square frame, thus yielding a less perfectionist picturesque romanticism, which Choi consciously employs for City (Lot 182). Instead, Choi chooses to stylishly mediate the raw shaping of the jean with traditional square frame, exhibiting her ability to construct a mature ambiguity of an oeuvre that adapt to both sculptural and painterly essence. Choi's experimentation controlled by craftsmanship produces an end result that prompts a surprising vitality through its alteration by dye and wrinkles.
