Specialist note
A novelist and painter, The Hon. Emily Eden (d. 1869) accompanied her brother George, 1st Earl of Auckland to India in 1836 where she acted for him as hostess while he was Governor-General (1836-1842). Her pictures were first exhibited in 1844 by J. Dickinson as Portraits of the Princes & People of India and published that year as a set of 24 lithographs. She also published a collection of pictures known collectively as Up the Country (1866) and two society novels, The Semi-detached House (1859) and The Semi-attached Couple (1860).
