Specialist note
An identical design for a wine cooler by Moitte numbered '228' was sold at Sotheby's, Monaco, 26 November 1979, lot 627. It is possible that this design was for a wine cooler very close in style to one executed by Henri Auguste, as part of the silverware given by the City of Paris to Napoleon in 1804 (G. Gramaccini, Jean-Guillaume Moitte (1746-1810): Leben Und Werk, Berlin, 1993, II, p. 65, no. 159.15).
A related frieze to that featured in this drawing is in lot 123.
