A Serow, Naemorhedus (Capricornis) sumatraenis
pen and black ink and watercolour, irregular cut out
18 x 20½ in. (45.7 x 52.1 cm.)

Note du spécialiste

The Serow or goat-antelope is an elusive, agile animal frequenting high rainfall areas on forested or bushy slopes in the forests of Kashmir through to central China and Sumatra.

For other examples of these artists, on a similar scale and with a high degree of detail and finish, see S. C. Welch, Room For Wonder, Indian Painting during the British Period 1760-1880, 1978, nos. 6-9, and lot 7. Of these artists this drawing is closest to the work of Shaikh Zayn-al-Din.
