Samuel Colman traveled throughout the western United States to find fresh material in the splendid vast landscape. Works produced by the artist during these travels are generally considered some of his best and can be seen in major collections across the country including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York who holds Spanish Peaks, Southern Colorado, the finished version of the present work, in their permanent collection.
