Specialist note

The present lot is an atypical composition by Abraham Storck, that shows the heritage of Bonaventura Peeters the Elder. This might indicate that this is an early work by Storck. In any case, the various ship-types point to a date after 1665. The two ships in the background appear to be English, whereas the man-of-war in the forground is of Dutch making. However, the coat-of-arms on its stern can be identified as that of the English Fleet, since it is identical to the stern of the English flagship 'Royal Charles'. Possibly the Dutch ship had been confiscated by the English during a naval battle.
