This work will be included in the forthcoming Auguste Rodin catalogue critique de l'oeuvre sculpté currently being prepared by the Comité Rodin at Galerie Brame et Lorenceau under the direction of Jérôme Le Blay under the archive number 2008-1831B.
The present lot was once owned by B. Gerald Cantor, the renowned philanthropist and collector whose donation of Rodin sculpture to Stanford University made it the second largest repository of works by the artist in the world after the Musée Rodin, Paris. Cantor gifted this La Douleur to the present owner, who was the head of the Coubertin foundry, as a token of his appreciation for their casting the La porte de l'Enfer for Stanford University.
