Specialist note
This iconic scene depicts the fishermen of Ballydavid in Co. Kerry at the time when they were fishing for mackerel. As stocks dwindled they switched to fishing for lobsters, and then eventually salmon. With the advent of the ban on driftnet fishing in 2006 this livelihood is no more and scenes such as the one depicted in the present work are consigned to the past.
