Specialist note

The bedsteps, with vase-baluster rail, conceals a chamber pot in its carpeted steps. The fashion for such furniture introduced around 1800 was popularised by P. and M.A. Nicholson'’s, Practical Cabinet-maker, Upholsterer and Complete Decorator, 1826. Gillows supplied several related 'Pair of Bedside Steps £10.18.0' to the 5th Duke and Duchess of Rutland at Belvoir Castle between 1821-24.
