Specialist note
The magnificent plinth-supported wine sarcophagus-cistern, designed en suite with the Grecian temple-pedimented sideboard-table (see lot 30), is conceived as a palm-wreathed wine-krater vase, whose Grecian altar- plinth stands on Dionysiac/Bacchic lion-paws issuing from palm-flowered trusses. George Smith's related 1804 'celeret/wine-cistern' pattern was equipped with lion-mask handles, and further enriched by masks of the Dionysus/Bacchus and the Arcadian Pan (G. Smith, Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1808 pl. 98).
