Specialist note
Heeremans was a late representative of the Haarlem School of landscape painters. This composition is a fine example of the river landscapes for which the artist is renowned, with the employment of a receeding diagonal river bank, a motif invented by Jan van Goyen and Salomon van Ruysdael.
