Anish Kapoor (British/Indian, b. 1954)

The Bombay born Turner Prize winning Anish Kapoor is most well known for his seemingly simple brightly coloured and usually monochromatic forms that unite organic shapes with sensual materials to create a powerful and evocative union that simultaneously engages and confounds the viewer. The finished sculptures are often executed on a grand scale and are frequently finished with inviting surfaces of brightly coloured pigments inspired by the markets and temples of India. In creating these works, Kapoor relies on and is inspired by his exploration of shape, colour and line in his numerous works on paper. These drawings, heavily worked with dense layers of gouache and pigment reveal an interest in myth and biology but most importantly in emotion and the human psyche. The expressive and exuberant nature of these works seems to address the more primitive and chaotic side of Kapoor's investigation into the sublime.
