Specialist note

The sitter is Julius Krauskopf (1787-1869), an artist from Kassel, and was close a friend of Menzel. The present lot was presumably executed in 1866 during Menzel's stay in Kassel, and depicts Krauskopf at age seventy-nine, as noted in the inscription.
